Conservation has been a consistent thread through Rowan's marine biology career. His conservation experience includes sea turtle conservation, leatherback turtles, sharks, marine wildlife, tropical marine environments, habitat conservation, marine pollution and biodiversity.

His work in Dominica and the wider Caribbean involved direct engagement with leatherback sea turtle conservation, including work with the Rosalie Sea Turtle Initiative. The Howth Harbour Seabin Initiative is a more recent example of Rowan translating marine biology knowledge into practical conservation action at a community level.

Deep-Sea Marine Biology Research

In 2012, Rowan participated in the Changing Oceans research expedition aboard the RRS James Cook. Independent reporting records him as a marine biologist and Heriot-Watt University researcher investigating the potential impacts of carbon capture and storage leakage on marine ecosystems.

His research involved investigating potential effects of CO₂ on marine species, including cold-water coral and shellfish — organisms that are particularly sensitive to changes in ocean chemistry.

This work sits at the intersection of deep-sea ecology, climate science and ocean acidification — areas of growing importance as the effects of climate change on marine ecosystems become better understood.

Howth Harbour Seabin Initiative

Rowan saw plastic accumulating in Howth Harbour, County Dublin, and initiated the installation of a Seabin — a practical, community-focused project designed to intercept plastic pollution before it reaches the wider marine environment.

The initiative involved crowdfunding, employer support, community involvement and cooperation with the harbour authority. TheJournal.ie independently describes Rowan as the marine biologist who started the initiative.

Rowan's career developed from marine biology and field research into senior environmental consultancy and technical leadership. His professional experience includes roles at Mott MacDonald, Ocean Science Consulting and WSP.

During his time at Mott MacDonald, he held senior roles in marine ecology and environmental assessment, including the Marine Plastics Lead position.
