Marine wildlife, conservation and fieldwork photography by Rowan Byrne.
Selected photographs from more than 30 years of marine biology fieldwork — leatherback sea turtles in Dominica, great white sharks in South Africa, sperm whales, coral reefs, ocean plastics and more. Each image is a document of real fieldwork, not a staged shot.
Enquire about a printEvery photograph in this collection was taken during active marine biology fieldwork. Rowan Byrne has spent more than 30 years working in marine and freshwater environments — from leatherback sea turtle research on the beaches of Dominica to great white shark encounters off the coast of South Africa.
These are not stock images or staged wildlife shots. They are documents of real scientific work — research, conservation, monitoring and fieldwork — made available as fine art prints for collectors, institutions and individuals who want to own a piece of that record.
Rowan Byrne is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and a Chartered Scientist. His leatherback sea turtle photography from Dominica was used as the basis for a USPS Forever Stamp — one of the most widely distributed wildlife images in postal history.

Rowan Byrne's leatherback sea turtle photography from Dominica documents one of the most important leatherback nesting beaches in the Caribbean. The Rosalie Sea Turtle Initiative (RoSTI) has been monitoring and protecting leatherback nesting on this beach for decades. One of Rowan's leatherback photographs was selected as the basis for a USPS Forever Stamp — the most widely distributed leatherback image in history.
Gansbaai, South Africa
Great white shark fieldwork off the coast of South Africa — one of the world's most important great white shark habitats. These photographs were taken during active research and represent a species under increasing pressure from fishing, habitat loss and climate change.
Dominica, Caribbean
Sperm whale encounters in the deep waters off Dominica — one of the world's most important sperm whale habitats. Dominica's resident sperm whale population has been studied for decades and is central to global sperm whale research.
Howth, Dublin
Marine plastics fieldwork in Howth Harbour, Dublin — monitoring ocean plastic pollution and the impact of marine debris on coastal ecosystems. The Howth Seabin Initiative documents the scale of plastic pollution entering the marine environment from a single Irish harbour.
