Marine mammals are a diverse group of air-breathing, warm-blooded animals that have secondarily adapted to life in the ocean. They include seals, sea lions, walruses, sea otters, manatees, dugongs and polar bears — as well as whales, dolphins and porpoises. Despite their evolutionary return to the sea, they retain distinctly mammalian characteristics: they breathe air, give birth to live young and nurse their calves with milk.
Marine mammals evolved from land-dwelling ancestors that gradually adapted to aquatic life over millions of years. Seals, sea lions and walruses (pinnipeds) evolved from bear-like ancestors approximately 25 million years ago. Sea otters and polar bears are more recent marine adaptations within the order Carnivora. Manatees and dugongs (sirenians) share a common ancestor with elephants and evolved their aquatic lifestyle around 50 million years ago. Each group has independently evolved similar adaptations — streamlined bodies, insulating blubber or dense fur, and modified limbs for swimming — a striking example of convergent evolution.
Marine mammals have evolved remarkable physiological adaptations that allow them to dive to extraordinary depths and hold their breath for extended periods. The diving reflex — triggered by immersion in cold water — slows the heart rate dramatically, reducing oxygen consumption. Blood is shunted away from non-essential organs to the brain and heart. The spleen acts as a reservoir of oxygen-rich red blood cells, releasing them into circulation during dives. Muscles contain high concentrations of myoglobin, an oxygen-binding protein that gives seal muscle its characteristic dark colour. The Weddell seal can dive to 600 metres and remain submerged for over 80 minutes.
Pinnipeds — seals, sea lions and walruses — are the most diverse group of non-cetacean marine mammals. True seals (phocids) lack external ear flaps and move on land by undulating their bodies; in water they are supremely agile, using their rear flippers for propulsion. Sea lions and fur seals (otariids) have small external ear flaps and can rotate their rear flippers forward to walk on land. Walruses are distinctive for their long tusks, used in social interactions and to haul themselves onto ice. Pinnipeds are found in all oceans, with the greatest diversity in cold, productive polar and subpolar waters.
Marine mammals face a wide range of conservation threats. Historical hunting for fur, oil and meat severely depleted many populations — the northern elephant seal was reduced to fewer than 100 individuals by the late 19th century before protection allowed recovery. Today, bycatch in fishing gear, entanglement in marine debris, pollution, underwater noise, boat disturbance and climate change are the primary threats. Climate change is particularly severe for ice-dependent species: polar bears, walruses and ice-breeding seals are losing critical habitat as Arctic sea ice declines. The Mediterranean monk seal is one of the world's most endangered marine mammals, with fewer than 700 individuals remaining.
