When the ecologist left the ocean and entered the forest

For much of Rowan Byrne's career, the natural environment had been understood through oceans, coasts, rivers, freshwater systems, marine mammals, sea turtles, coral reefs and kelp forests. Then came the opportunity to work within a very different ecosystem: Wytham Woods, near Oxford.

The experience reinforced a principle that has shaped Rowan's ecological thinking: ecosystems are connected. A forest, river, wetland, coastline and ocean cannot be treated as isolated systems. Carbon moves between systems. Water connects landscapes. Nutrients move downstream. Biodiversity depends upon habitat connectivity. Human activity affects every part of the system. Ultimately, everything on land is connected to the ocean.

Rowan's reflection: the only forest he really knew was a kelp forest. Wytham Woods gave him a very different forest to understand. The habitat was different. The ecological principles were not.

The HSBC Climate Partnership

The HSBC Climate Partnership was a five-year global environmental programme launched in 2007. It brought together HSBC with four major environmental and research organisations: Earthwatch Institute, WWF, The Climate Group, and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.

The partnership committed US$100 million over five years and focused on climate change and its implications for people, forests, freshwater, cities, ecosystems, business and sustainability. It was one of the largest corporate environmental partnerships of its era.

Wytham Woods — a living climate laboratory

Wytham Woods, near Oxford, has been owned and maintained by the University of Oxford since 1942. It is one of the most studied areas of woodland in the world, hosting continuous ecological research programmes for decades.

Wytham is recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is exceptionally rich in biodiversity. Research at Wytham has examined population ecology, biodiversity, ecosystem dynamics, climate change, forest ecology, species interactions, carbon stocks, and habitat connectivity.

As the European Regional Climate Centre within the HSBC Climate Partnership, Wytham Woods hosted a structured monitoring programme including ten one-hectare plots across forest edge, fragment and core woodland, measuring tree growth, forest dynamics and carbon stocks.

From field data to climate understanding

Long-term ecological monitoring is the foundation of climate science. At Wytham, the Earthwatch programme used citizen scientists alongside professional scientists to collect environmental data — measuring tree growth, tracking forest dynamics, recording biodiversity and monitoring carbon stocks.

This field data contributed to understanding how forests respond to climate variability, how ecosystem resilience is maintained or eroded, and how habitat fragmentation affects ecological function. The programme generated peer-reviewed scientific publications and contributed to the broader evidence base for climate change research.

Turning climate science into business knowledge

A central purpose of the HSBC Climate Partnership was to transform scientific knowledge into practical business understanding. Rowan worked with HSBC staff from Europe and the United States, presenting and explaining the science of climate change, its ecological consequences, its socioeconomic implications, and the relationship between environmental change and business.

The objective was not simply to teach employees environmental facts. The aim was to help participants understand how climate and environmental change could influence business decisions, risk and long-term sustainability — and to equip them to take that understanding back into their organisations.

The AAAS documented the HSBC Climate Partnership as a unique citizen science model. HSBC Climate Champions — employees selected from across the organisation — attended Earthwatch research centres and worked alongside professional scientists collecting field data.

At Wytham Woods, employees participated in forest monitoring, tree measurement and ecological surveys. They learned about climate science, explored the socioeconomic impacts of environmental change, and were encouraged to bring sustainability action back into the workplace.

Rowan's work at Wytham was not simply about ecology.
