Sperm Whale — Dominica
Physeter macrocephalus
Quick Fact
Sperm whales have the largest brain of any animal that has ever lived on Earth, weighing up to 9 kg.
Filmed during Rowan Byrne's fieldwork in Dominica.
About This Species
The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is the largest toothed predator on Earth and the deepest-diving mammal, capable of descending to over 3,000 metres in search of giant squid. Dominica's steep underwater topography — the island drops to over 1,000 metres within a short distance of shore — makes it one of the world's premier locations for sperm whale encounters. A resident population of sperm whales lives in Dominican waters year-round.
Why It Matters
Sperm whales are deep-sea nutrient cyclers — their waste fertilises surface waters, supporting phytoplankton growth that underpins the entire ocean food web and absorbs atmospheric carbon.
Transcript
Dominica is one of the few places on Earth where you can reliably encounter sperm whales in the wild. I've been lucky enough to spend time in the water with them here, and it's one of the most profound experiences of my life. Sperm whales are the largest toothed predators on the planet. Males can reach 20 metres. Their brains are the biggest of any animal that has ever lived. They dive to over 3,000 metres in search of giant squid. They can hold their breath for 90 minutes. The pressure at those depths would crush a human instantly. But what really gets me is their social structure. Female sperm whales live in tight family units — grandmothers, mothers, daughters — for their entire lives. They babysit each other's calves. They communicate through complex patterns of clicks called codas. Different family groups have different dialects. They are, in every meaningful sense, a society. Sperm whales were hunted almost to extinction for the oil in their heads — spermaceti — used in lamps and machinery. Their populations have never fully recovered. When you look into the eye of a sperm whale, you understand immediately that we share this planet with beings of extraordinary intelligence. We owe them our respect.
