Marine Protected Areas — Why They Work
Quick Fact
Well-managed Marine Protected Areas can increase fish biomass by up to 600% — and the benefits spill over into surrounding unprotected waters.
About This Species
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are designated zones where human activities — fishing, mining, development — are restricted or prohibited to allow marine ecosystems to recover. Well-managed MPAs can increase fish biomass by up to 600% within their boundaries, with spillover benefits for surrounding fisheries. Currently, only about 8% of the world's oceans are protected, and a fraction of that is fully protected. The global target is 30% protection by 2030 — the so-called '30x30' goal.
Why It Matters
MPAs are among the most cost-effective conservation investments available. Protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030 could safeguard biodiversity, support fisheries, and help the ocean absorb carbon — but only with genuine enforcement.
