Sea turtles are among the most remarkable navigators in the animal kingdom. They use the Earth's magnetic field to orient themselves across vast ocean distances, returning to the same beaches where they were born to nest — sometimes after journeys of over 10,000 kilometres. Research has shown that sea turtles can detect both the intensity and inclination angle of the magnetic field, effectively reading a magnetic map of the ocean.

Sea turtles are one of nature's most extraordinary navigators. A female leatherback can travel 10,000 kilometres across open ocean — and return to the exact beach where she was born to lay her own eggs. How do they do it? The answer is magnetism. Sea turtles have magnetite crystals in their brains — essentially a biological compass. They can detect the Earth's magnetic field and use it to navigate with extraordinary precision. Each beach has a unique magnetic signature, and turtles imprint on that signature as hatchlings. Decades later, that magnetic memory guides them home. I've watched leatherback hatchlings emerge from nests in Dominica and scramble toward the sea. They're already navigating — using the brightness of the horizon over the water to find their direction. Once in the ocean, they enter what scientists call the lost years — a period of several years during which they drift in ocean currents, growing and developing, before returning to coastal feeding grounds. We still don't fully understand everything about sea turtle navigation. But what we do know is remarkable enough. These animals have been making these journeys for 100 million years. The ocean is their home. We need to make sure it stays that way.
