The hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) is one of the most critically endangered sea turtles in the world. Named for its narrow, pointed beak — shaped like a hawk's bill — it feeds almost exclusively on sea sponges, which are toxic to most other animals. By controlling sponge populations, hawksbills prevent sponges from overgrowing and smothering coral, making them essential architects of reef health. Their beautiful shells have made them a target for the illegal tortoiseshell trade for centuries.

The hawksbill turtle has a beak shaped like a hawk's — narrow, pointed, perfectly designed for reaching into crevices in coral reefs to extract sponges. And that specialised diet makes them one of the most ecologically important animals on the reef. Sponges are fast-growing and highly competitive. Without hawksbills to control them, sponges would overgrow and smother coral. Hawksbills are essentially the reef's maintenance crew — keeping the balance that allows coral to thrive. They're also one of the most critically endangered sea turtles on Earth. Hawksbills have been hunted for centuries for their beautiful shells — tortoiseshell — used in jewellery, combs, and decorative items. Millions were killed. Their populations collapsed. The trade in hawksbill products is now banned under CITES, but illegal trade continues. Nesting beaches are lost to coastal development. Fishing gear entanglement kills thousands every year. Hawksbills are found throughout tropical and subtropical oceans. They nest on beaches across the Caribbean, Indo-Pacific, and Indian Ocean. Each female returns to the same beach where she was born — sometimes after 30 years at sea. A reef without hawksbills is a reef in decline. Protecting these turtles means protecting the entire coral ecosystem they maintain.
