About This Species
Seahorses (genus Hippocampus) are among the most unusual fish in the ocean. They are the only species where the male becomes pregnant — the female deposits eggs into a specialised brood pouch on the male's abdomen, where he fertilises and carries them until birth. Seahorses are poor swimmers, relying on camouflage and their prehensile tail to anchor to seagrass and coral. They are monogamous and perform elaborate daily greeting rituals with their partners.
Why It Matters
Seahorse populations are declining globally due to habitat loss, bycatch, and demand for the traditional medicine trade. Their dependence on seagrass and coral habitats makes them particularly vulnerable to habitat degradation.
