When the algae die and decompose, bacteria consume vast quantities of oxygen, creating hypoxic conditions. The Gulf of Mexico dead zone, fed by agricultural runoff from the Mississippi River basin, is one of the largest.

There are over 700 dead zones in the world's oceans. Areas where the water contains so little oxygen that almost nothing can survive. They're called hypoxic zones. And they're growing. Here's how they form. Agricultural fertilisers — nitrogen and phosphorus — wash off farmland into rivers and eventually into the sea. This triggers massive blooms of algae. When the algae die, bacteria decompose them. That decomposition process consumes enormous amounts of oxygen. The oxygen level in the water crashes. Fish, crabs, shrimp — anything that can move, flees. Anything that can't, dies. The largest dead zone in the world sits in the Gulf of Mexico, fed by nutrient runoff from the Mississippi River basin — one of the most intensively farmed regions on Earth. At its peak, it covers an area the size of New Jersey. The Baltic Sea has one of the most severe dead zone problems in the world — decades of agricultural and industrial runoff have created vast areas of near-lifeless seabed. Climate change is making it worse. Warmer water holds less oxygen. Stratification increases. Dead zones expand. The solution is straightforward in principle — reduce nutrient runoff through better agricultural practices, wetland restoration, and tighter regulation. But the political will to take on the agricultural industry is rarely there. The ocean is suffocating. And we're the ones holding the pillow.
